Troubleshooting Common Boot Issues: Easy Fixes for Fit and Comfort
When buying a new pair of work boots, sometimes you run into a few minor issues. The good news is that most of these problems are easy to fix with a few easy adjustments. Whether it’s sizing concerns, break-in discomfort, or small hardware issues, knowing how to troubleshoot your boots can make a big difference in comfort and performance. Especially if you rely on them in demanding jobs and environments.
Fixing Loose Bots
One of the most common issues people experience is related to sizing, particularly with boots feeling loose or unstable. In many cases, the problem is related to how you lace your boots. Properly tightening your boots across the instep and around the ankle can significantly improve how secure they feel. For new boot owners, this can take a little practice. If you’re struggling to get them fitting snug and are using leather laces, consider swapping out the leather laces for some common nylon ones. These materials are easier to tighten and allow you to really cinch the boot down helping your foot stay locked in place. Doing this for the first few days or sometimes weeks is a good way to improve the fit.

What to Do If Your Boots Feel Too Tight
On the flip side, if your boots feel a bit too tight, there are a couple of easy solutions to try before looking at different sizing options. One of the simplest first adjustments is changing your sock thickness. Using a little bit of thinner socks as the boot starts to wear in is a great first step. One of the cool things about the leather that we use is it molds to your feet over time. General oiling and wear are a couple additional steps to help improve your fit. It’s amazing to see how the leather gives and breaks-in if you oil around the toe, sides, and ankle of the boot generously.. Usually two or three times a day for three days and then just wearing them. It’s awesome to see how quickly they can wear in when you do this. So definitely give this a try first if your boots feel snug initially.

It’s also important to understand proper toe room. Some people are surprised at the amount of space that there is at the front of a boot. A well fitting boot should have about a thumb’s width of space between your toes and the front of the boot. This is intentional because as the boots break in, the arch will settle and the toe box may curl slightly. That extra space prevents your toes from hitting the front, which can lead to discomfort and improper fit.
Other Troubleshooting Tips
If you have narrower calves or ankles, another thing you might notice is the upper portion of the boot is a little loose. A simple solution for this is to see if you can get a longer tongue guard that goes all the way to the top of the boot. It will fill in that space and improve the overall fit so it won’t bother you. It’s a small adjustment that can make the boot feel much more secure.
Lastly, another issue that a few people might have is when eyelets start to rub out on an area and wear through on one side. Taking and inserting a Phillips screwdriver into it and rotating it to use the opposite side is a quick fix that can save you from bigger problems later.
These are just a few common boot issues that aren’t necessarily deal breakers, they just require a bit of know-how. By making small adjustments and understanding how your boots work and are designed to perform, it’s possible to improve your comfort, extend their lifespan, and get the most out of your investment.
