Resoles and Rebuilds: How JK Boots Are Built to Last for Years
A lot of your typical work boots have a fixed lifespan. Once the sole starts to wear down and the structure starts breaking apart, you throw them away and buy a new pair. JK Boots are built around a completely different philosophy where the boot lifespan doesn't end as soon as it starts to wear out. Through resoles and full rebuilds, a single pair of JK Boots can keep going for multiple years. Here's exactly what you can expect from each service, what they involve, and why this matters.

What is a Resole?
A resole is the most common service and the simplest way to extend the life of your boots. When the outsole and heel wear down, the rest of the boot like the upper, midsole, and the internal structure still have plenty of life left in them.
When we get a pair of boots for a resole, we strip off the worn rubber, replace the outsole and heel with new ones, and stitch everything back up. The result is a boot that feels completely like new at the bottom while still keeping all the comfort and fit it already had from the break in period. That broken-in leather insole made to mold to the exact shape of This is amazing because that broken-in leather insole that molded to the shape of your foot stays right where it is.
Example of boots sent in for a resole
Typically for a boot used in demanding conditions, a resole becomes necessary after two or three seasons of hard use, depending on how well the boots are maintained. This is why our boots cost what they cost and are renowned for lasting as long as they do. Because you can just use and beat up your boots, get a resole, and keep on using the same boots again.
What is a Full Rebuild?
A rebuild is a little more involved. When a boot needs more than just some fresh rubber on it and the entire lower portion is worn down beyond just a resole, that's when we just tear down everything below the upper. The vamp, counter, midsole, outsole, and all the other internal components are removed leaving only the leather upper or what are known as "quarters".
That upper is then fitted with entirely new lowers, counter, and fully rebuilt bottom structure with all new components and leather. This results in essentially what is a new boot built around your original leather upper that was already broken in.
Example of uppers from boot sent in for rebuild
This is all possible because of how we build our boots. The 8-9oz leather upper is 50% thicker than most of our competitors, meaning it is made to outlast multiple resoles. When a pair comes in for a rebuild after two and a half to three years of hard use and the leather is still fairly clean and structurally intact with all the stitching in place, that is a direct reflection of the material quality, along with proper care. A full rebuild also costs less than half the price of a new pair making it a really great value proposition when it comes to work footwear.
Why does this Matter?
The average disposable work boot lasts around six to twelve months of hard daily use before it's done. A pair of JK Boots that is properly maintained can just be sent in for a resole or rebuild when needed and just keep going after that. That initial investment may be higher but the long term cost per year adds up in the long run. These are the differences between these two services.
